Application
Steel Wire Armoured (SWA) Cable features a robust construction with a black PVC sheath, XLPE insulation, copper conductors, and steel wire armouring. Designed for mains electricity supply, it is widely used in power networks, underground installations, and both external and internal wiring, including residential mains connections. The steel wire armouring enhances durability, making it ideal for direct burial by protecting against mechanical damage. The XLPE insulation offers excellent resistance to heat, chemicals, fluids, and UV exposure, ensuring reliable performance in harsh environments.
Construction
1. Conductors
- Material: Plain circular, compacted, or shaped stranded copper/aluminium.
- Types:
- RE = Circular solid
- CC = Compacted circular stranded
- SM = Sector-shaped stranded
2. Insulation
- Material: XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene)
- Temperature Rating: 90°C
- 3. Core Color Identification
- 1 Core: Red or Black
- 2 Cores: Red, Black
- 3 Cores: Red, Yellow, Blue
- 4 Cores: Red, Yellow, Blue, Black
- 5 Cores: Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, Green
- Above 5 Cores: Black with white numerals
- Custom color coding available upon request.
4. Assembly / Inner Sheath
- Insulated cores laid up with non-hygroscopic fillers.
- Extruded PVC bedding (omitted for non-armoured cables).
5. Armouring
- Multi-core cables: Galvanized steel wires or Aluminium/Steel tapes (IEC 60502).
- Single-core cables: Aluminium wire armour (to prevent magnetic losses).
6. Outer Sheath
- Standard: PVC (Type ST2 per IEC 60502-1 or Type 9 per BS 6346/5467).
- Special Sheath Options (on request):
- Fire Retardant, Anti-Termite, Anti-Rodent, UV/Oil-Resistant PVC
- Alternative Materials: LLDPE, MDPE, HDPE, LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen), CPE
7. Fire Performance
- Flame-retardant options available (IEC 60332-3-22/23/24 compliant).
- LSHF (Low Smoke Halogen Free) sheathing per IEC 60502-1, BS 7211, BS 6724.
