NYY vs VV – Naming Convention
| Designation | Standard | Region | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| NYY | European / IEC | International | N = Standard (VDE) / Y = PVC insulation / Y = PVC sheath |
| VV | Chinese / GB | China | V = PVC insulation / V = PVC sheath |
*Both designations refer to the same cable construction: Copper conductor, PVC insulation, PVC sheath, rated 0.6/1kV.*
Why Choose PVC Insulation and Sheath?
| Feature | PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) | Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Low | Most economical insulation material |
| Flame retardancy | Inherent | Self-extinguishing, does not propagate fire |
| Moisture resistance | Good | Suitable for damp environments |
| Chemical resistance | Good (oils, acids, alkalis) | Performs well in industrial settings |
| Flexibility | Good | Easy to handle and install |
| UV resistance | Good (black version) | Suitable for outdoor use |
| Temperature rating | 70°C continuous | Adequate for most LV applications |
Note: For applications requiring higher temperature rating (90°C continuous) or low smoke & halogen free properties, consider XLPE/LSZH alternatives.
Single Core vs Multi-core – Selection Guide
| Number of Cores | Application |
|---|---|
| Single core | Phase conductor, DC applications, flexible installations, large cross-sections |
| 2 core | Single phase circuits (L + N) |
| 3 core | Three phase circuits (L1 + L2 + L3) without neutral |
| 4 core | Three phase + neutral (3L + N) |
| 5 core | Three phase + neutral + earth (3L + N + PE) |
*For TN-S earthing systems, 5 core cables eliminate the need for a separate earth conductor.*

Installation Guidelines
Preparation
Inspect the cable for any damage to the PVC sheath before installation
Store cables on clean, dry reels, protected from direct sunlight and moisture
Preheat the cable if ambient temperature is below 0°C – cold cable can crack the PVC sheath
Pulling Tension
Maximum pulling tension (copper conductor): Approximately 50 × conductor cross-section (mm²) in Newtons
Use proper pulling grips (basket weave) – never pull by the insulation
Conduit Fill
Maximum recommended fill: 40% of conduit cross-sectional area for 3+ conductors
Use pulling lubricant for long runs
Termination
Strip back PVC sheath and insulation carefully – do not nick the copper conductor
Use properly sized copper lugs and terminals
Apply appropriate torque for termination screws
Testing After Installation
Perform insulation resistance test (minimum 100 MΩ)
Conduct continuity test on all conductors
High voltage test (3kV AC or 3.5kV DC for 15 minutes per IEC 60502-1)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What does NYY stand for?
A: NYY is the European designation: N = Standard (VDE), Y = PVC insulation, Y = PVC sheath.
Q: What does VV stand for?
A: VV is the Chinese designation: V = PVC insulation, V = PVC sheath.
Q: Are NYY and VV the same cable?
A: Yes. They refer to the same construction: copper conductor, PVC insulation, PVC sheath, rated 0.6/1kV. NYY is the European naming convention, VV is the Chinese naming convention.
Q: What is the temperature rating of the PVC insulation?
A: PVC insulation is rated for 70°C continuous operation, 100°C emergency overload, and 160°C short circuit (≤5 seconds).
Q: Can this cable be used outdoors?
A: Yes. The black PVC sheath is UV stabilized for outdoor exposure. Light-colored sheaths (white, red, blue) are not recommended for direct sunlight.
Q: Is this cable suitable for direct burial?
A: The unarmoured version (NYY/VV) has limited direct burial suitability. For direct burial in areas with mechanical risk or rodents, we recommend the armoured version (NYY-J / VV22 with steel tape armour).
Q: Is this cable flame retardant?
A: Yes. PVC materials are inherently flame retardant and self-extinguishing. The cable complies with IEC 60332-1.
Q: What is the difference between Class 1 and Class 2 conductors?
A: Class 1 is solid copper (single wire) – used for small cross-sections (1.5-10mm²). Class 2 is stranded copper (multiple wires) – used for larger cross-sections and where flexibility is required.
Q: Do you provide free samples?
A: Yes, we provide free samples of NYY/VV cable. The customer is only responsible for the shipping cost.
Q: What is the typical lead time?
A: Typical lead time is 7–30 days after deposit confirmation, depending on order quantity and conductor size.
Q: Can I get custom printing on the cable?
A: Yes, we support OEM/ODM orders including custom printing (project name, customer logo, sequential metering, voltage marking).
Q: Is LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) version available?
A: Yes, we offer LSZH versions (N2XH / WDZ-YJY) for applications requiring low smoke and halogen-free properties. Please contact us for details.
