Aerial Bunch Cable( ABC) cable——need to know

March 10, 2026

What is Aerial Bunch Cable( ABC) cable?

Aerial Bunch Cable(ABC) is a bundled cable used for overhead power lines. It is widely used in low-voltage and Medium Voltage distribution systems in rural areas, hilly regions, tourist development zones, and other regions.

Unlike traditional bare conductors, ABC cables come with an insulating layer, which can prevent electric leakage and reduce external interference, and allowing cables to be directly installed in the air without conduit protection. They offer advantages such as ease of installation, high safety, and resistance to wind and corrosion.

Classifications of ABC Cable

Usually, ABC cables are classified based on insulation material and conductor material.

1. Insulating material

Insulation material

Long-term operating temperature

Short-circuit temperature resistance

Weather resistance

Typical applications

XLPE

90℃

250℃

Excellent

Medium and high voltage main grid, urban power grid

PE

70℃

150℃

Good

Low-voltage lines, cold regions

PVC

160℃

General

Temporary lines, low-cost projects

2. Conductor material

1) Aluminum core (Al)

Features: Light weight, low cost, and conductivity that meets most power distribution needs

Application: Widely used in medium and low voltage overhead lines, it is currently the mainstream choice

2) Copper core (Cu)

Characteristics: Excellent conductivity, strong corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength

Disadvantages: high price, heavy weight

Application: For applications where high electrical performance is required, such as critical load areas or urban core areas with limited space

3) Aluminum alloy core

Features: Higher strength than pure aluminum, stronger tensile capacity, good corrosion resistance

Application: Lines in areas with large spans, high wind pressure, or heavy icing, especially suitable for mountainous and coastal regions

4) Aluminum Conductors Steel Reinforced (ACSR)

Structure: The outer layer is made of aluminum conductor, while the inner layer is a galvanized steel core

3.How to choose

When choosing ABV cables, it is necessary to consider the usage environment, load requirements, and budget. For example, ABC insulated conductors are suitable for humid or rainy regions; if the budget is limited, PVC insulated conductors are an economical choice. Also the cross-sectional area of the conductor also needs to be reasonably selected based on the current magnitude to ensure safe and efficient power transmission.

In addition, the choice of conductor material directly impacts the safety, economy, and long-term stability of the power system. In most conventional projects, copper conductors are preferred due to their good conductivity and reliable connections, however, copper is much more expensive in long-distance power transmission or cost-sensitive projects, aluminum or aluminum alloy conductors offer better cost-performance ratio. The specific choice needs to be comprehensively evaluated based on electrical performance, mechanical strength, environmental conditions, and budget
